Beaver Lodge Lands - An Urban Trail Gem in Campbell River BC

Nestled in the heart of beautiful Campbell River, British Columbia, the Beaver Lodge Lands stand out as one of the finest trail systems the city has to offer. This fantastic green corridor effortlessly connects central Campbell River to Willow Point and is a proud part of the Greenways Land Trust and the extensive Greenways Loop that encircles our vibrant city.
A Haven for Wildlife and Recreation
The Beaver Lodge Lands are a vibrant ecosystem, teeming with diverse wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for magnificent pileated woodpeckers, elusive bears and cougars, and of course, the industrious beavers after which the lands are likely named! This natural sanctuary provides a perfect escape for all.
A Rich History of Preservation
The story of the Beaver Lodge Lands is as rich as its biodiversity. Once logged in the early 1900s by railway, this area was thoughtfully gifted as an experimental forest in 1931. For decades, it served as a cherished playground for local kids. However, its future was secured in the 1990s when an active community campaign, championed by dedicated individuals like Don McIvor (who now has a trail named in his honor), successfully led to the passage of the Beaver Lodge Lands Trust Act in 1993. This pivotal legislation ensured the land was donated to the city in trust, cementing its status as arguably the most important piece of real estate in Campbell River. Here, you can still discover intriguing remnants of old logging activities alongside majestic second-growth trees—silent witnesses to the forest's enduring history.
Trails for Everyone
The Beaver Lodge Lands boast a versatile, shared-use trail system, making it a perfect destination for everyone. Whether you're a hiker, a dog owner (many of whom enjoy letting their well-behaved canine companions roam comfortably off-leash), a cyclist, or even an equestrian, you'll find your path here. The main trail, affectionately known as the Rail Trail, offers excellent connectivity, linking various points across the area.
One of the most remarkable aspects of the Beaver Lodge Lands is its accessibility. The trails are generally flat and easy-going, welcoming individuals with mobility issues and those using wheelchairs. With numerous access points from surrounding neighbourhoods, it’s incredibly convenient to jump onto the trails. Whether you're looking for a quick bike ride, a leisurely stroll, or just a breath of fresh air, the Beaver Lodge Lands are an accessible and cherished urban oasis. We are truly lucky to have such a gem!
